The forces of nature include gravity, wind, fire and earthquakes. The engineering of structures to account for these forces is a demanding science. For over 50 years BSC has provided structural engineering services to the residential, municipal and industrial sectors. Our innovative performance has been recognized over the years.
Structural design for residences in all their forms –houses, units, apartments – forms a large part of the work that we do at BSC, servicing both external clients and working in-house with the building design team at A1 Drafting (founded by BSC). The building permit process requires the submission of structural computations, structural drawings and a Certificate of Compliance signed by the Endorsed Engineer. These are all prepared and issued by BSC.
All structures rely on footings and foundations for longevity and structural integrity. Structural design starts here and further may include rafters, roof beams, lintels, floor joists, floor beams, floor slabs, posts, piers, piles and retaining walls. BSC staff liaise with architectural designers and clients to achieve the results expected.
Clients from a diverse range of industries have turned to BSC for advice and engineering services. BSC has designed footings and bases for pressure vessels, timber kilns, brick kilns, bolt making machines, paper cutting machines, for aircraft engine testing, cemetery vaults and gas compressor stations. We have designed safety railings, platforms, plant enclosures, canopies, staircases, steel mesh flooring, isolated toilet structures and bridges. We have designed retaining walls in timber, steel, concrete, brickwork and blockwork, mass rock walls and using modern formwork such as Rediwall. Factories in concrete panels, steel framed brickwork and steel clad have all been designed.
1978 – High Commendation from the IEAust Vic Division Excellence Awards for the design of the Greensborough Footbridge. A fifty metre span, three pinned arch structure in treated, laminated pinus radiata.
1998 – Design Excellence Award from ASCEV for the 68 metre span, restrained two pinned arch footbridge over the Maribyrnong River, Essendon. This was constructed largely in laminated jarrah.
2001 – Design Excellence Award from ASCEV for a cypress pine picnic shelter in Ruffey Lake Park, Doncaster. The large span curve roof beams have become a feature of the park, with council commissioning a second similar shelter in 2008.
